We Should All Be Feminists

We teach girls to shrink themselves
To make themselves smaller
We say to girls
“You can have ambition
But not too much
You should aim to be successful
But not too successful
Otherwise you will threaten the man”
Because I am female
I am expected to aspire to marriage
I am expected to make my life choices
Always keeping in mind that
Marriage is the most important
Now marriage can be a source of
Joy and love and mutual support
But why do we teach to aspire to marriage
And we don’t teach boys the same?
We raise girls to each other as competitors
Not for jobs or for accomplishments
Which I think can be a good thing
But for the attention of men
We teach girls that they cannot be sexual beings
In the way that boys are
Feminist: the person who believes in the social
Political, and economic equality of the sexes

Fashion Diaries – Monochrome Style

I  love the website Polyvore!
Polyvore disrupts the traditional e-commerce model by giving everyone everywhere a voice in shaping today’s trends and influencing purchases. The savvy community is ahead of the curve, predicting trends before they hit the mainstream. Polyvore’s global community has created over 80 million collage-like “sets” that are shared across the web.You can create an account for free, which gives you access to millions of images to create to your own sets and collections to reflect your personal style. The best bit is the images link you to where you can buy the product!

Each week I will share my latest creation on Polyvore so you can keep up to date with what styles are inspiring me 🙂 xx

Monochrome is a massive fashion trend for 2013 and this is an easy look to nail! Just add black and white. Stick to tailored shapes and clean crisp lines. Yes, you can just wear a black pencil skirt and white blouse but try mixing it up a little with statement block panels, checks, prints or stripes! FYI curvy figures suit a horizontal stripe top with black pants or skirt. Vertical stripes are good for a busty figure and pear shapes suit wide vertical stripes. Adding monochrome accessories will instantly update your look too; try adding a zebra belt, monochrome heels or bag.

The monochrome look is very sharp so it’s great for corporate wear!

Pointed Nails Trend

I recently gave into the pointed tip nail trend after years of having square nails, and I love it! It’s so nice having something different and they make my fingers look skinny and long 🙂 What do you think of this trend? Have you tried it out yet?

Genevieve Warburton – Shave For A Cure

A few weeks ago I shaved my head for Shave For A Cure! It was an amazing experience and I actually love having no hair! I would highly recommend trying it, at the end of the day its only hair – it will grow back, plus it’s for a great cause! 🙂

Check out this awesome video that Ben Silcock made of my head shave!

Top 5 Fashion Trends for Winter

Summer is drawing to an end for us here in NZ so it’s time to start thinking about the winter wardrobe! Winter is defiantly my favourite season when it comes to fashion, I love wrapping up warm!

London Fashion Week recently gave us a sneak preview into the top trends to keep an eye out for this winter! Which trend is your favourite?

1. Thigh High Side Split Skits:

This is a trend that was originally introduced in spring, but has carried on into winter fashion. Split skirts are a great item to help accentuate the length of your legs! Defiantly one of my favs for this season!

The fashion trend that never seems to die. You will never go wrong with a leopard print piece in your wardrobe!

3. Turtle Necks:

Turtle necks are back from the 90’s and are a great layering tool.

4. Capes:

Maybe not the most practical piece for the wardrobe, but they will add a WOW factor to an outfit.

5. Dusty Pinks:

Dusty pink hues where prominent on the catwalk at London Fashion Week. It’s such a beautiful colour and suits so many different skin tones.

Volunteering @ The SPCA

One of my goals this year was to do some volunteer work and I decided to do it at the SPCA because I feel really strongly about humane treatment of animals. I have had quite a few of you ask me questions about what is involved with volunteering at the SPCA so I thought I would blog about it!

SPCA Voluteer

Firstly I currently volunteer in the Cat Ward and it is only for a 1/2 day, once a month. Parts of the job are a bit stinky but working with the cats and kittens make up for it!

Basically the day consists of:

  • Clean the cages
  • Provide the cats/kittens with clean kitty litter, water and food
  • Washing food bowls & litter trays
  • Re-stocking food
  • Mopping floors

It is hard work, but I find it really enjoyable. Don’t get me wrong some of it is sad, there are some really old and sick cats, but it’s nice knowing you are helping to give them the best environment possible.

I would really recommend volunteering to people that have an interest in animals, being able to get involved is really rewarding, and it’s nice to know you are helping to make a difference, even if its only small.

SPCA Volunteer

If you are interested in volunteering at the SPCA just head to their website and you can apply for different roles depending on what is available. Unfortunately I can’t take photos of the animals that are at the SPCA, so please enjoy these pictures of cute cats I got off the internet 🙂

PS – If you have any other questions or want to talk to me about what it is like volunteering at the SPCA, please write to me on my Facebook Page.

Shaving My Head For a Cure

For those of you that have followed my blog for the past few years you would have come to realise that I don’t really do “tame” hairstyles! After a lot of consideration these past few weeks I have decided to shave my head, and in the process raise money for the “Shave For A Cure” charity. Shave For A Cure is one of the fund-raising events put together by Leukaemia & Blood Cancer Association here in NZ. LBC is the national charity dedicated to supporting patients and their families living with blood cancers and related blood conditions, this support can last months or even years

Shave For A CureI would really love your support if you could please donate to this amazing charity through the link below!

I will be shaving my head on Tuesday 26th March, the shave will be filmed so keep an eye out for the video!

Pastel Blue Nails

Whilst I didn’t get any nail art during my last visit to Diamond Nails in Ponsonby, Auckland, I still had to share my latest manicure with you! Purely because this colour is amazing, maybe one of my all time favourite OPI colours!

What do you think of this colour?
